Friends of the Alden Library
The Friends group was formed in 1996 with two purposes in mind: first to garner support for the library, and second to help with fundraising for the proposed library project. The group meets quarterly and holds an annual meeting every June. The group has sponsored National Library Week (book bags, bookmarks, and free books) and has purchased several items for the library. In December of 2000, they held their first Holiday Festival of Tables. In the spring of 2001, Friends President Marcia Hovinga wrote a successful grant to receive funds to convert over 400 slides of Early Alden History to video. In 2018, the Friends Group partnered with Alden Elementary School to provide books to students in grades K-6th. Volunteers from the Friends group read the books or part of the books that are given to the students to promote interest. A variation of this program will be expanded in 2019 to include children birth-age 5 years old.
The Friends Group is an integral part of the Dr. Grace O. Doane Alden Public Library. Library lovers everywhere are invited and encouraged to join their local Friends of the Library group. These dedicated volunteers advocate for libraries, raise much needed funds, sponsor programs and special events. If you haven't joined your Friends, please contact us below to join.
